Report of variola cases at Genl. Hosp. #26, dated 1/14/63.
213 Main Street
Richmond, Va., Jany 14th, 1863
Chief Surgeon Mason
Sir,
I have the honour to report that in an inspection of Gen. Hosl No. 26 on Jany
11th, I saw a case of variola which had existed in the person of a nurse of the
Hospital for some ten days or two weeks which had not been reported in
accordance with instructions Jany 5th 1863, to Surgeon Rice in charge of
Howard's Grove Hosl. Surgeon West informed me that there was a difficulty in the
diagnosis and when clearly diagnosed he thought he could trust to the isolation
of a separate room.
I report this dereliction to you for official action.
Very Respectfully,
Your Obedient Servant,
Wm. A. Carrington
Surgeon & Inspector of Hospitals
