From the Richmond Dispatch, 10/23/1861, p. 2, c. 3
Excellent Arrangement. – We learn that two
ambulance cars are now in course of preparation at the shops of the Central
Railroad Company in this city, the purpose being to run one in connection with
every passenger train to and from Manassa. Each of these ambulances will contain
twenty-two single and eleven double berths, capable of accommodating forty-four
persons. Under the skillful direction of Mr. Chiles, the master of car repairs,
they will be arranged with due regard to comfort and convenience, and will
render the journey of the invalid soldier comparatively easy. It is probable
that they will be ready in a week or two.
