From Richmond Dispatch, 5/21/1861, p. 2
Three hundred and fifteen men, part of the 1st
Regiment of North Carolina volunteers, arrived in Richmond Saturday night, and
are now encamped at Howard’s Grove, on the Mechanicsville turnpike, about half
a mile from the Old Market-House. Seven companies, numbering seven hundred and
odd men, (the balance of the Regiment,) will arrive here this evening via
Petersburg Railroad. Thousands of the valiant men of the Old North State are now
in “harness,” and awaiting the means of transportation to the soil of
Virginia.
