From the Richmond Dispatch, 7/17/1861, p. 2

Fifth Regiment North Carolina Volunteers. - The good old North State is pouring forth her legions without stint in the present war. - Yesterday arrived the splendidly armed and equipped Fifth Regiment, composed of stalwart and gallant sons of our sturdy and unconquerable south-side neighbor, commanded by Col. Duncan K. McRae. They marched in town about 12 o’clock, and, proceded by a drum corps, went into camp near Howard’s Grove. The regiment numbered about 1,100 men.
