STONE-WALL JACKSON - A correspondent asks us, “Why is Gen.
Jackson called Stone Wall Jackson?”
We have one or two explanations of the origin of the
sobriquet. The best one, and we believe the correct one, is: At the battle of
Bull Run, while Jackson with his small force held in check a much superior force
of the enemy, Gen. Beauregard, filled with admiration of his obdurate gallantry,
remarked to a brother officer, “See Jackson! He stands firm as a stone-wall!”
