From the Richmond Dispatch, 6/3/1862, p. 2, c. 4Amputated. We regret to state that our surmise of yesterday relative to the necessity of amputation in the case of Dr. E. S. Gaillard, Chief Surgeon on the Staff of Major-General G. W. Smith, has proved correct. Dr. Gaillard’s right arm was amputated half way between the elbow and shoulder joints. The operation was performed in a most skillful manner by Dr. Michie, and no fears are entertained of the ultimate recovery of the patient. This loss, though a sad one to Dr. Gaillard, is not so great to him as it is to the Confederacy, of which he was a faithful, skillful, and most indefatigable officer.
