From the Richmond Dispatch, 7/28/1862, p. 1, c. 7

City Water Works. – The wheels that supply the water to the reservoir are now kept almost constantly in motion. We are informed by the Superintendent that the consumption of water is now just double what it was this time last year. This is owing, in great part, to the hospitals and large number of non-residents for some time past domiciled in the city.
