From the Richmond Dispatch, 5/4/1863
The
Confederate Flag. – We saw on
Saturday the first flag of the Confederate States in accordance with the design
of Congress adopted at its recent session. The white ground was recommended by a
number of military and naval officers, as possessing the requisite of
distinguishment at a long distance. The battle-flag was retained as the union
because of its association with so many brilliant feats of our brave men under
it.
