RING-LEADER OF A PLOT
PUNISHED. – About one hundred and fifty of the prisoners confined in Castle
Thunder, combined in a plot, on Christmas night, to assassinate the sentinels
and secure their escape. The plot, however, was discovered in good time to
prevent its consummation. On Saturday the ring-leader of the arrangement, David
Welsh, a Yankee murderer and thief, was discovered. He was punished with
stripes, placed in irons, and is now kept on bread and water.
