From the Richmond Enquirer, 5/8/1862, p. 1, c. 7

CITY GAS WORKS. – The profits of the City Gas Company for the past fiscal year exceeds seventy thousand dollars. The condition of the works is, according to the report of the superintendent, excellent. It is worthy of note that the slave labor which has been employed for the last three months, in place of the treason-smitten foreigner who had previously been engaged at the works, have proven fully equal to them in intelligence and energy, and far superior to them in docility.
