From the Richmond Enquirer, 6/17/1862, p. 1, c. 7

PROMOTION. – Capt. G. W. Alexander, Assistant Provost Marshal of Richmond has, we learn, been promoted to the position of Assistant Adjutant General to Brig. Gen. Winder. Capt. Alexander has justly won the confidence to his superiors, by the admirable manner in which he has discharged the duties which have been assigned him hitherto, and his conduct in the affair of the capture of the steamer St. Nicholas, and in his subsequent escape from Fort McHenry, has long since proven the character of the metal of which he is made. Without intending to afflict him with a compliment, we must add that he is not only one of the most gallant, but one of the handsomest men in the Confederate service.
