A SOLDIER SHOT BY A CITY PICKET. – On yesterday afternoon,
a Sergeant in Company A, 9th Alabama Regiment, while intoxicated,
approached the pickets stationed on the Petersburg Railroad bridge, and, upon
disobeying orders to halt, was arrested. Being in no humor to submit quietly to
capture, he proceeded to exert himself towards divesting his captor of his
musket, and his conduct at length became so desperate that the picket, in self-defence,
found it necessary to shoot him. The bullet entered his right side, inflicting a
severe wound. He was taken immediately to the Kent, Paine & Co. Hospital, on
Main street.
