From the Richmond Enquirer, 1/13/1862
THIEVING YANKEES. – Notwithstanding the fact that the
Yankee prisoners confined in this city, have cost the Confederate Government an
immense sum of money, they have also been a source of considerable expense to
some of our citizens. For instance, the 400 confined in the tobacco factory of
Captain John W. Atkinson, have consumed 4,100 pounds of chewing tobacco, and two
hogsheads of smoking, which were left in the factory by the proprietor. These
“Yankees” have also destroyed all the tobacco machinery in the factory which
they could put their hands upon. In the back yard of the factory, a large
quantity of lumber had been deposited, of which these Hessians destroyed 7,000
feet. Truly, an expensive lot of prisoners.
