From the Richmond Enquirer, 5/27/1862
A CRAZY BULLET AND A FOOLISH SOLDIER. - On yesterday
afternoon, the government guard were about to arrest a soldier in front of
Seabrook's warehouse, when one of Caskie's Rangers, Richard Barry, by name, rode
up and interfered, by drawing a pistol and protesting against it. One of the
guard forthwith leveled his piece at him, pulled trigger, and Barry tumbled out
of his saddle. Upon examination, it was found that the bullet had penetrated the
fleshy part of his thigh, tore away a part of his saddle, glanced in front,
struck the horn of the saddle, rebounded into Barry's pantaloons, and slipped
down into one of his boots.
Another example of bullet-freakishness and soldier
foolishness.
