“THE WINDER GUARDS.” - This is the cognomen of a
military organization formed among the Confederate prisoners at Castle Thunder
for the defence of Richmond. Two companies of about one hundred and fifty men
each, are now at the front doing excellent service, under the command of Major
Vowels. But two have deserted, but they were hard cases, and are better out of
the command than in it.
