From the Richmond Examiner, 7/5/1864
THE CONDITION OF THE WOUNDED in Richmond hospitals is
becoming such that the Surgeon General is beginning to diminish the number of
hospitals to correspond with the decreasing number of patients cared for in
them. Thousands of the wounded in the battles of May and June have been
furloughed from the hospitals, and are abroad in the country or have gone to
their homes. It is a gratifying fact that the percentage of deaths have been
less this summer than during any season since 1861. This owing to the great
abundance of ice which is now used in the hospitals.
