From the National Archives, RG 109, Ch. 6, Vol. 707-709; “Letters Received and Sent, Chimborazo Hospital. 1861-64.” 3 Vols: Vol. 709, pt. 1, p. 115

Medical Director’s Office,
Richmond, Va. 22nd May 1864

Sir;

I desire to open at once a Receiving Hospital at the “Old Fair Grounds” Barracks.

To do so I will require:

Hos. Stewards                          No. 3
Ward Masters & Nurses          No. 45
Cooks                                      No. 12

Please inform me, at once, how many of these attendants you can spare me – sending their names &c.

I would like very much to get one of your Stewards, who is accustomed to managing you laundry arrangements with outsiders.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Svt.
Wm. A. Carrington
Med. Director

Surgeon J. B. McCaw
