Captain Sally Louisa Tompkins.

RICHMOND, Va., July 25. – Captain Sally Louisa Tompkins, 83 years old, the only woman ever commissioned as an officer in the Confederate Army, died today at the Home for Confederate Women. She was commissioned a Captain of Cavalry in order that she might continue to conduct a private hospital after such institutions had been ordered closed.
