A Famous Postmistress Ill.
Special to the New York Times.

RICHMOND, Va., July 27. – Miss Lizzie Van Lew, for many years Postmistress here, is critically ill. Miss Van Lew was made Postmistress of Richmond by Gen. Grant soon after he became resident. This was done in recognition of the splendid service she had rendered the Union cause during the war. She was not only loyal to the Federal side, but rendered valuable aid to Gen. Grant, with whom she was in constant communication. Miss Van Lew also aided the Federal officers who tunneled their way out of Libby Prison to escape through the lines.
