From the Richmond Whig, 2/24/1862, p. 3, c. 3
PRESIDENT’S LEVEE. - The rain of Saturday continued to
trickle, pour, and drip, until a late hour of the night, and (we regret to have
to record the shameful fact,) the streets were not gas-lighted, as we had been
led to suppose. Yet, despite these drawbacks, crowds of citizens and sojourners,
repaired to the President’s House to pay their respects to the Chief Magistrate.
The Armory Band was present, and enlivened the occasion by their inspiring
performances.
