From the Richmond Whig, 10/31/1864, p. 1, c. 4
FEMALE SOLDIERS. - Mary and
Mollie Bell, alias Tom Parker and Bob Morgan, were brought to this city,
via Central cars, last night, dressed in soldiers' garbs. Mollie was interesting
and sprightly, and looked every inch a snug little soldier boy; her cousin,
Mary, was rather reserved and gloomy, and did not make such a favorable
impression as the other. They are from Southwestern Virginia, have been in the
service two years, and, it is said that, during that time they have followed
General Early through all his battles, killing more than a dozen Yankees with
their own guns. Captain Doswell, Assistant Provost Marshal, committed them to
Castle Thunder till such time as other provisions can be made for their welfare.
