From the Richmond Whig, 3/29/1864, p. 1, c. 2
DETECTIVE ITEMS. - Philip
Cashmeyer, arrested some time since for attempting to send letters North by a
prisoner on the flag-of-truce boat, has been re-instated in his position of
special detective at Gen. Winder’s office.
Augustus Syncoe, the detective
who was sent to the penitentiary for shooting Emma Thompson, has been pardoned
by Gov. Smith. Sending the worst criminals to the penitentiary now-a-days is
little more than a farce. The shooting of this woman, by this man, was one of
the most outrageous crimes ever perpetrated in any Christian community.
