From the Richmond Whig, 6/29/1864, p. 2, c. 6
MAYOR’S COURT. - ...Bob, slave
of Miss Mary Jane Phillips, had been caught in the street with a shoulder of
bacon. He stated to the Mayor that the bacon had been given him to sell by
Daniel Brown, the negro cook in the 3d division of Camp Jackson Hospital. The
case was continued until this morning. The berth of hospital cook must be a
desireable place in the occupancy, in a tie of scarcity like the present, have
bacon to sell.
Wm. White and James Johnson,
slaves, were sent on to the Hustings Court for stealing blankets, sheets,
drawers and tin plates from the Medical Purveyor’s Department. A large number of
keys of different sizes were found on the negroes.
