From the Richmond Whig, 6/7/1864, p. 2, c. 6

THAT WOMAN. - It is pretty well ascertained that the “highly intelligent woman” who carried to Beast Butler the story of Major Mayo being thrown into Castle Thunder for proposing to surrender Richmond, is one Catherine Hays, who ran off from the city to escape the consequences of her crimes. At the time of her elopement she was under indictment in the Hustings Court for receiving a ton of pig iron stolen by negro wagoners from the Confederate States. For a year or more she kept a low groggery and receptacle for stolen goods on the south-side of the Basin.
