From the Richmond Whig, 7/13/1864, p. 1, c. 6
MAYOR’S COURT. - ...William F.
Corkley, proprietor of the Spotswood Hotel, charged with violating the
anti-liquor law by retailing ardent spirits to be drunk in his bar room. In this
case the police officer saw a gentleman take a drink at the bar - got into
conversation with him, and learned that the potation in which he had indulged
was brandy - no soda water and raspberry vinegar this time.
