DEATH OF GEN. STAFFORD. – At 10 o’clock yesterday
morning, Brig. Gen. L. A. Stafford died at the Institute Hospital in this city,
from the effect of a wound received in the battle of Thursday evening on the
Rapidan. He was wounded in the right shoulder by a musket ball, the ball
traversing the back and injuring the spine.
General Stafford was from Rapides Parish, Louisiana, and
before his promotion to the rank of Brigadier, commanded the 9th
Louisiana Regiment. He was forty-eight years of age, and leaves a wife and nine
children. In his death the country is called to mourn the loss of a good man and
a gallant and skillful officer.
