Here are the options as I see them for our NYC trip - I am a BIG fan of planned events, and putting focus on things that can only be done in New York. I assumed we'd be doing everything together, but for instance, if Will didn't want to see a show and Dad and I did, that could readily be accommodated. This is for planning purposes, and subject to change.

Option 1: 2 Games, 1 Broadway Show

Friday – drive up, 7:05 game
Saturday – 1:05 game, evening free
Sunday – 2 PM Matinee show, drive home

BUDGET:              Games: ~45/game x 3 = $135 per game. $270 for two games.
Show: 42-75 per show x 3 = $126 – 225
TOTAL: $396 - $495

                                                                Option 1 Combined Total:  $851 - $950

Option 2: 2 Games, 2 Broadway Shows

Option 3: 3 Games, 1 Broadway Show

Friday – drive up, 7:05 game
Saturday – 1:05 game, 7 PM show
Sunday – 1:05 game, drive home

BUDGET:              Games: ~45/game x 3 = $135 per game. $405 for three games.
Show: 42-75 per show x 3 = $126 – 225.
TOTAL: $531 - $630

Option 4: 1 Game, 1 Show

Saturday – 1:05 game, 7 PM show
Sunday – AM free, drive home

BUDGET:              Games: ~45/game x 3 = $135 per game.
Show: 42-75 per show x 3 = $126 – 225.
TOTAL: $261 - $360

Option 4 Combined Total:  $716 - $815

Option 5: 1 Game, 2 Shows

Friday – drive up, 7 PM show
Saturday – 1:05 game, 7 PM show

Option 4 Combined Total:  $968 - $1130

Crazy Option (per Will’s suggestion)

Thursday: Leave around 3 PM, check in around 9:30 - 10.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday. All other options apply, with the exception that Friday’s day would not be spent driving, thus leaving the entire day for sightseeing, museums, etc. No matinee shows or day games on Friday.

Add $90 for extra night in hotel for this option.

Assume

~$160 for the drive (gas/tolls)

$30 per day, parking in NY.  ($90)

Unknown, but low, amount for subway pass

Hotel costs - $205 total for two nights - smoking room in the Newark hotel I’ve been to before (http://www.daysinnnewark.com/).

Total - $455+

SHOWS. I cannot recommend Gypsy too highly. I have seen it, yes, but would love to see it again. I think its one of those shows that is a classic with even a so-so cast, and incredible with an amazing one. This production is in the latter category. I don't think either of you should miss it.

Other shows I would recommend or would like to see (there aren't a boatload of them during the summer)

Spamalot (really funny)

[title of show] (brand new, but supposedly really good)

August: Osage County (a play, but supposedly pretty incredible)

The 39 steps (a comedic version of the Hitchcock film)

Phantom of the Opera (I've seen this many times, but it definitely is one of those experiences that you should probably have, so I wouldn't mind seeing it again)

Young Frankenstein (not the best, but enjoyable)

Here are the links for the discount codes: Broadway Box, Playbill, Theater Mania

In addition, there are day-of discount tickets available at the TKTS booth on 46th street. Sometimes they're pretty much giving the tickets away, but you have to pay cash. This is always an option if you want to see a show cheap and don't want to have it planned in advance. Of course you avoid the odious "handling charges" from ordering online, but you take what you get, which during the summer, isn't usually much.
