From William A. Carrington CSR (M331): Inspection report, dated 11/11/1862, for Manchester Camp & Prison Hospital

Richmond, Nov. 11^th, 1862

                                Sir,
                                        I have the honour to report that I have this day inspected a small Hospital under charge of A. A. Surgeon L. R. Chiles in Manchester.

It is situated on Main St. about 300 yards from Mayo's bridge - The building used is one used as Barracks for a Co. on the post - The Hospital consists of a room capable of holding 25 patients - A neighboring house is used as kitchen by the sick & those on duty.

The office of the Surgeon is very near & is used as an apothecary shop for the Hospital.

There are 15 men in the Hospital - 4 of them from the prisons composed of stragglers & others arrested by the provost guard & the others from Capt. Moseley's & Capt. Hankins Cos. on duty in Manchester bring the aggregate 170 men.

Dr. L. R. Chiles is contracted with to attend these companies & the prison at $100 per month.

I am of opinion that the good of the service does not require a hospital to be established here & the comfort of the men will also be enhanced by [having] removed them (when sick enough to be sent to a Hospital) to Genl Hospital No. 8 corner of 15^th St. & Main & in within a few blocks of the barracks on the same continuous street - neither is the building used suitable for a Hospital.
