From the Richmond Dispatch, 8/15/1862

Manchester. – Under the influence of martial law, our neighboring town of Manchester continues to enjoy a season of uninterrupted repose, and we seldom hear of an incident or accident within its limits worthy to be placed on record. A military prison has been for some time established there, wherein are confined a number of deserters, Unionists from a distance, and some individuals who have been caught “running the blockade” with packages of “contraband” about their persons. The institution, which seems to be well regulated, is under the immediate charge of Capt. Peacock, Assistant Provost Marshal.
