From the Richmond Enquirer, 9/6/1861
ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE. – Last night, at 9 o’clock, two of
the prisoners confined in the Tobacco Warehouses attempted to escape; the guards
fired twice, the alarm was instantly responded to by Captains Waddill and
Davis’ companies, Louisiana Battalion, stationed on Libby’s hill, foot of
Main Street. One of the Yankees was wounded, it is said, seriously. – Too much
praise cannot be accorded to these gallant companies for the promptness with
which they responded to the alarm, and shows what may be expected of their
accomplished commanders when they meet the foe.
