From the National Archives, M437 (Letters Received by the Confederate Secretary
of War 1861-1865), Roll #101
General Winder
The Hospital at Camp Winder is a
General Hospital. The object of establishing it as a Military Post was only to
protect the public property, and to maintain order outside of the Hospital.
These duties can as well be discharged by a good commissioned officer, as by any
one else.
Captain Archer will therefore be
release from duty, and a Police Guard sent by the orders of a Sergt. or
Lieutenant who will be stationed at the Hospital for the purpose above
mentioned.
G. W. Randolph
Secretary of War
Aug. 25th 1862
I certify that this is a correct copy of the official
document now in my possession.
A. G. Lane
Chief Surgeon
G. H. Camp Winder
