Sir,
I have
the honor to report that I have inspected the 20th & 18th Battalions of
Heavy Artillery, stationed respectively at Batteries 9-10 & 4-5. My
appointment as Surgeon dates from the 15th of May, ‘62. I have at Batteries
5-4 & 10 small hospitals established by me for the use of the Sick of the
above named commands. They are entirely self sustaining. I am assisted in the
20th Battalion by Asst. Surgeon Thos. Smith appointed 14th of August with the
rank of Capt. [,] Dr. George Hammond contract Surgeon Acting Assistant Surgeon
assists me in the 18th Battalion. The 20th Battalion is 700 men. The 18th
numbers 410 men exclusive of officers. Dr. Hammond’s rate of compensation is
$100 per month.
