From the Richmond Whig, 5/4/1865
MANCHESTER MATTERS. - The Provost Marshal of Manchester has
done a good thing in taking up and putting all the idle colored population of
that town to work cleaning up the streets and lanes. The women have been packed
off to Belle Isle, which is to converted into a grand wash-house and laundry for
the soldiers stationed at the Manchester post. - The citizens appear to be well
pleased with the turn affairs have taken, and have turned their attention from
war to the cultivation of their gardens.
